Second Half Surge Lifts #10 Augustana Past Chicago

CHICAGO -- Sparked by a 15-0 second half run, 10th-ranked Augustana College defeated the University of Chicago 63-56 in non-conference men's basketball action Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Chase Davis gave Chicago (3-8) a 46-36 lead on a jump shot with 14:01 left in the contest.

Chris Anderson then tallied five of his 15 points as Augustana (11-0) outscored the Maroons 15-0 to go up 51-46 at the 8:25 mark.

A pair of free throws from Stephen Palmtag ended a 6:45 Chicago scoring drought and trimmed the Vikings' lead to 51-48 with 7:16 to play.

Augustana answered with a 7-2 run capped by a Kyle Nelson three-pointer to increase its advantage to 58-50 with 3:39 remaining. The Vikings led by at least four points the rest of the way. Nelson finished the day with 11 points.

Chicago took its only lead of the first half at the 1:20 mark when Davis' three-pointer put the Maroons on top 28-27.

Bryan Voiles' three-point shot as time expired in the period gave the Vikings a 30-28 edge at the break. Voiles led all scorers with 19 points.

Matt Johnson and Tommy Sotos paced the Maroons with 11 points each. Johnson extended his double-digit scoring streak to 10 games.

Chicago outshot the Vikings 44% to 41% for the game, but was held to 37% in the second stanza after hitting 52% of its tries in the first half.

Led by nine boards from Voiles, Augustana outrebounded the Maroons by a 39-28 margin.
