La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team ended its season with a 66-63 loss to UW-Platteville Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament. The Eagles finish 14-12 on the season while the Pioneers improve to 17-9. UW-Platteville will advance to the tournament semifinals and play at UW-River Falls Thursday, February 24 at 7:05 p.m.
UW-L, the tournament's fourth-seed, raced out to a 17-6 lead Tuesday night with 11:33 remaining in the first half, but UW-Platteville went on a 20-0 run to lead 26-17 with 5:05 left. The Pioneers, the fifth-seed, made 10 straight field goal attempts, including nine in their 20-0 run. The Eagles missed 12 consecutive shots from the field.
UW-Platteville led 28-18 with 4:11 left after a Nick Allen layup, but UW-L used a 13-0 run itself to take a 31-28 lead with 1:25 remaining in the half. The Eagles made seven straight field goals in their run asTony Mane scored nine of the 13 points. UW-L led 33-32 at halftime.
UW-L led 43-38 with 15:40 left in the game before UW-Platteville went on a 7-2 run to force the only tie of the game at 45-45 with 13:37 remaining. The Pioneers went on a 9-2 run to lead 54-47 with 10:07 left after a Brett Stangel three-pointer.
Trailing 64-58 with 2:28 remaining, Mane converted on a three-point play to cut the lead to three with 2:17 left. UW-Platteville missed on a three-point attempt and Mane hit a pair of free throws with 1:27 remaining to make it 64-63.
The Pioneers turned the ball over with :56 left, but the Eagles missed a pair of shots and Stangel was fouled with :20 remaining. He hit both free throws for a 66-63 lead. Mane missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with :10 remaining and UW-Platteville's Chas Cross was fouled. He missed the front end of a one-and-one with :07 left, but Mane's final three-point attempt was missed as the Pioneers held on for the victory.
Mane finished with 33 points and 11 rebounds Tuesday, going 11-of-24 from the field, including five-of-10 from three-point range. He was six-of-six at the line. The 33 points is tied for sixth-most in single-game WIAC Tournament history. Mane and UW-Superior's Vince Thomas hold the single-game record with 37 points. Mane scored 37 points at UW-Stevens Point in 2008 while Thomas had 37 at UW-Eau Claire in 2001.
The all-time leading scorer at UW-L, Mane finishes his career with 2,095 points. He ranks sixth in WIAC history in scoring. His 666 points this year set a single-season school record. Mane scored in double figures in 88 of 102 games for the Eagles, including 16 games with at least 30 points.
Jordan Rumpel added eight points for UW-L Tuesday. The Eagles shot 37.1% from the field, including 41.2% (seven-of-17) from three-point range, and 76.9% (10-of-13) at the free throw line.
Eric Wall led UW-Platteville with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Allen finished with 15 points and five assists. Cross also had 10 rebounds. The Pioneers shot 50.9% from the field, including 36.4% from three-point range, and 66.7% at the line.
