Brooklyn, NY --- With his layup at the 7:21 mark of the first half, Brooklyn College senior guard Amil John surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau in BC's 87-56 victory over the Vaughn College Warriors in a non-conference match earlier tonight at the West Quad Center.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 6-2 overall on the season, while the Warriors fall to 4-5 overall on the year.
John finished the game with 22 points to lead all scorers on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, including going 2-for-4 from beyond the arc. He also dished out a game-high seven assists, to go along with five steals and four rebounds.
Playing in his 83rd career game, John has started in 80 games, while accumulating 1,006 points, 343 rebounds, 215 assists and 234 steals.
Brooklyn led from end to end as the Bulldogs never trailed in the ballgame. After a layup from Vaughn's Ryan Burchette tied the game at 2-2 early on with 17:56 remaining in the half, BC would jump out to a 22-point lead utilizing a 26-4 run over the next five minutes to take full control of the contest.
The Warriors would be unable to recover from the Bulldogs' offensive charge, as Brooklyn would maintain a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game.
Along with John, senior guard Tyshawn Russell and junior forward Kavon Baker contributed with 12 points apiece, while junior forward Steven Grant added 13 points and five rebounds coming off the bench. Sophomore forward Richard Spence also pulled down five rebounds, to go with his seven points.
For Vaughn, Jihad Ceasar led the Warriors with a team-high 14 points, while Jared Ndiba chipped in with 10 points. Burchette grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, to go with nine points.
For the game, Brooklyn shot 44.2% (34-77) from the field, including going 5-20 (25.0%) from three, to go along with 70.0% (14-20) shooting from the line.
Vaughn was held to just 33.3% (20-60) from the field and 9.1% (1-11) from three, while shooting 55.6% (15-27) from the charity stripe.
BC's stingy defense forced Vaughn into 40 turnovers, while accounting for 26 steals.
Following a break for final exams and the holidays, Brooklyn will return to action on Friday, December 30th as the Bulldogs will travel to Camden, NJ to take on Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference tilt. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
