GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Hood College received a career-high 21 points from Terell Buyck (Forestville, Md. / Bishop McNamara), but a comeback bid by the Blazers fell short against Washington & Lee in the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament.
Buyck matched his career-high in the first half with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes. He finished the evening 6-of-14 from the floor, 3-of-7 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 from the foul line. The senior added six rebounds and a steal to his stat line.
Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) also went 6-of-14 from the floor and hit a pair of threes. But beyond the shooting of Buyck and Cook, the rest of the Hood offense combined to go just 9-of-31 from the field.
Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) sank three 3-pointers on his way to 12 points and led the team with eight boards, three steals and two blocks. Freshman Luke Casey (Nanticoke, Pa. / Crestwood) added seven rebounds in his collegiate debut.
A layup by the Generals' John Martin with 7:11 to play put Hood in a 20-point deficit, 62-42. A pair of free throws by Tanner Ruths (Stephens City, Va. / Sherando) 22 seconds later started a 23-8 run by the Blazers down the stretch. After a field goal by Casey, Buyck would score 10 of Hood's next 12 points on a pair of threes and four free throws.
Andy Kleinlein hit two free throws with 49 seconds left to give Washington & Lee a 69-62 lead, but a bucket by Cook and a three by Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) cut it to 70-65 with seven seconds left. With the Blazers forced to foul, Jim Etling sank a pair of foul shots to end the comeback bid.
Including 3-of-7 by Buyck and 3-of-5 by Daniels, Hood hit 11-of-30 from behind the arc in the game (37 percent).
The Blazers took excellent care of the basketball on the evening, committing just nine turnovers, but a 36 percent shooting effort from the floor proved to be their undoing.
Kleinlein, who went 5-of-9 on 3-point field goals, led four Generals in double figures with 19 points. Patrick O'Connor added a dozen and Andrew Franz and Etling chipped in with 11 apiece. O'Connor also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while Franz had six rebounds and seven assists.
W&L had a strong night from the field, sinking 47 percent from the floor.
With the loss, Hood will take on Moravian in the consolation game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
