PORTLAND, Ore. -- In a finale fit for a Fourth of July fireworks show, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers fell 94-86 to the Johnson & Wales Wildcats in the final game of the Bon Appetit NWC Tipoff Classic, which finally started at 10 p.m. on Saturday night inside Pamplin Sports Center.
Earlier in the day, a power outage of over two hours pushed back the day's games, forcing the host Pioneers to move their start time back from 8 p.m.
Johnson & Wales took a 67-65, second half lead after two free throws by Quarry Greenaway, who led all scorers with 40 points, to mark the seventh lead change of the game. The visiting Wildcats eventually moved the advantage up to 10 points with 9:55 remaining before Lewis & Clark (1-1) got back within one on a Jason Luhnow lay-up with 1:19 to go.
With both teams in the bonus, Jonathan Boddie fouled Greenaway who made two more free throws before rebounding Luhnow's 3-point miss on the other end. Jarell Lawson made a three for JWU, growing the lead to 91-85.
After a successful Luhnow free throw, the Pios missed their final four shots of the game, as Johnson & Wales (1-1) held on for their first win of the year.
"The power outage made for a long wait, but it is one of those things that is out of your control and you have to just be flexible," said Luhnow. "JWU is a really good team and they came out motivated after losing the night before.
"These are the games we want this early in the season that are going to really prepare us for league."
Luhnow led the Pioneers in scoring for the second straight night, putting in 12 points in the first half to finish with 17, shooting 2 of 7 from the field and 2 of 5 from 3-point range.
Cannen Roberson, Cory Coombe and Boddie all scored double-digits out of the starting lineup, with Markel Leonard adding 10 from the bench. Boddie finished with a double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Roberson scored 15 points, as the two combined to shoot 12 of 22 from the floor. Coombe had 11 points.
Greenaway added 12 rebounds to his 10 of 17 shooting night.
Trailing 46-43 in the late first half, Johnson & Wales used a 7-0 run, fueled by scoring from Greenaway, Lawson and Tom Garrick, to build a four-point lead.
A pair of Luhnow free throws and a three from Coombe stopped Lewis & Clark's nearly three-minute scoring drought to give the Pios a momentary one-point lead, but Greenaway answered with a 3-pointer of his own.
Coombe then followed with a lay-in to tie the game at 53-53. Free throws by JWU's Clayton Roker and Lewis & Clark's Kyle Owens made it a 55-55 game at halftime.
Both teams were excellent from the free-throw line. Johnson & Wales made 35 of 39 attempts to finish 90 percent, while Lewis & Clark was 84 percent, making 21 of 25 attempts.
Johnson & Wales had an advantage on points off turnovers, 22-17, finishing with two fewer turnovers in the game, 17-15.
The Pioneers debuted the team's new gray jerseys in the game.
Lewis & Clark plays its first road games of the season at the Mission Inn Kickoff Classic in Santa Cruz, Calif. on Nov. 21-22.
