MADISON, Wis. -- The 11th-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team picked up a 78-66 win over Edgewood on Saturday afternoon for the team's first road win of the season.
The game opened very tight as neither team led by more than four points through the opening 15 minutes of the game, but a 14-3 run for UChicago over a three-minute span that was fueled by seven points from both Daniel Cochran and Nick Roper helped the Maroons build a 12-point lead at 37-25 with two minutes to go. Edgewood would score two buckets in the final two minutes to cut the lead to one possession, but UChicago would take a 38-29 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the locker room, the Eagles would continue their success at the end of the first half with an 11-2 run in the first three minutes to level the score at 40.
Facing some adversity for the first time in the game, the Maroons would answer with an 11-0 run of their own, highlighted by four points from Shane Regan and five different players scoring in the run.
The Eagles continued to fight down the stretch as they cut the lead to five twice in the second half, but once again, the Maroons would answer with 8-2 and 9-0 runs of their own to get the lead back to double figures as they would hold on for the 78-66 road win.
Despite shooting just 2-15 (13.3%) from three in the game, the Maroons dominated the paint with a 44-16 advantage inside the painted area.
Nick Roper led the team with a career-high 28 points, and he added nine rebounds and three blocks. Shane Regan also finished in double figures with a near-triple double as the Larmont, New York native tallied 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Daniel Cochran also added double figures with 11 points and eight rebounds.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 3-1 on the season. The team returns to action on Saturday, November 29 as UChicago travels to St. Louis for a pair of games against Rhodes and Colorado College in the All-Academic Classic.
