ST. PETER, Minn. – Four players finished in double figures – including a career-best 13 points for Patrick Smith – as the Carleton College men's basketball team upended No. 7-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on the road, 74-70.
"We knew we had a big challenge ahead of us tonight, as Gustavus is having an outstanding season and is one of the top teams in the country," said Carleton head coach Ryan Kershaw. "We had a bad taste in our mouth after we did not play up to our standards against Saint John's this past Saturday, and the team responded in a big way tonight. I'm extremely proud of the heart, pride and competitiveness the entire group showed."
Carleton (13-10, 9-5 MIAC) saw crucial contributions from nearly every player who saw significant time. Matt Drake tied for the game lead with 22 points and collected five assists. Smith reeled in nine rebounds and shot 5-for-6 overall, including the first two 3-pointers of his collegiate career. Josh Engelberg scored 13 points and Toby Averill notched 10 as the sophomores came up clutch in the final minute to score game-sealing points. Sam Koelling nearly posted a double-double with eight points and nine boards. Off the bench, Omar Kaba grabbed eight rebounds and added a skillful steal, and George Norsman swatted two shots.
Gustavus (21-2, 13-1 MIAC) entered the game riding a 19-game win streak, the second-longest active run in NCAA Division III. Dating back to last year, the Gusties are 28-3 against MIAC opponents, with all three of those defeats having been dealt by Carleton. The last time a conference team other than the Knights beat Gustavus was Saint John's on Feb. 10, 2024.
After trailing 30-25 at halftime, Carleton's offense took off in the second half, shooting a combined 60.7 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from deep (6-of-9) during the second half. The Knights outscored the Gusties 38-26 in the paint, accumulated 10 offensive rebounds leading toa 17-4 edge in second-chance points and finished plus-16 on the boards overall. That helped to make up for committing 19 giveaways, which led to Gustavus enjoying a 25-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
Both teams struggled to score early, and the Knights led 6-5 at the 15:48 mark following an Engelberg layup, but Gustavus scored seven straight to go up 12-6 three minutes later. Carleton called a timeout after Connor Beauchamp's layup to cap that run, and the visitors responded with a 12-4 run. That burst included a Smith making his first collegiate triple on a fadeaway as the shot clock expired, and a tough Kaba putback to put the Knights ahead 18-16 with a little over eight minutes left in the period The Gusties would wrest the lead back, and a corner trey from Andrew Quam beat the halftime buzzer to send Gustavus into the locker room leading 30-25.
Smith hit another triple 90 seconds out of the break that brought Carleton to within one point at 33-32. The Knights stayed close, and it was Kaba again who put the maize and blue ahead, making a layup through contact for a slim 41-40 Carleton advantage with 14:51 remaining.
This back-and-forth play would continue as both sides proved unable to gain much of an advantage. The game featured 12 ties and 19 lead changes overall.
With the score tied 49-49 with under nine minutes to go, the Knights put together their best run of the game, a 7-0 spurt over 80 seconds, capped by Averill's 3-pointer to give Carleton a 56-49 edge with 7:32 still to play. Gustavus responded to the Knights' largest lead of the contest with a 10-0 run of its own and regained the lead 59-56 with five minutes remaining.
The sides then traded the lead four more times, bringing the game to its final two minutes. Drake hit a step-back three to tie the game at 68-68 with 1:40 left, then capitalized on a Gustie turnover by converting a go-ahead layup despite diving nearly horizontally. Myles Barnette squared the game again at 70-all with a pair of free throws with 51 seconds left.
On Carleton's next possession, Koelling found a cutting Engelberg, who found a way to finish high off the glass over a defender, giving the visitors a 72-70 lead with 30 seconds to go. The Knights got a defensive stop, Engelberg corralled the rebound, and Averill swished a pair of free throws to seal the game.
Thanks to a blistering second half, the Knights made 54.0 percent of their shots in the contest, 44.4 percent (8-for-18) of their triples, and 70.6 percent (12-for-17) of their free throws. That shooting percentage is their best in MIAC play this year can came against a Gustavus squad that entered the game allowing the league's lowest field goal percentage to opponents.
Gustavus was held below its season averages, making 41.1 percent of field goals overall and 32.3 percent (10-for-31) of attempts from the outside. The Gusties cashed in from the line, making 14-of-15 foul shots (93.3 percent). Quam and Barnette were the only two Gustavus players to reach double digits, scoring 22 and 20 points, respectively. Quam was a season-best 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.
