The Team of the Week was in its sixth season in 2002-03, recognizing the top performance at each of the five positions from the previous week.

Men's

Casey Chapman
Chapman came off the bench to give UW-Stout a scoring spark as the Blue Devils won two overtime road games to stay in a tie for first in the WIAC. He scored a career-high 27 points in an 88-79 win against UW-River Falls, then followed that up with 18 points in an 85-81 win at UW-Eau Claire. On the week, Chapman scored 45 points, shooting 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) from the field, including 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from 3-point range and 8-for-10 (80.0 percent) from the line. He also added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Justin Call
Call led E&H to a 2-1 record on the week while averaging 24.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals. He also shot 62.2 percent from the field, 69.2 percent from 3-point range and 89 percent from the foul line. Call tied an E&H record when he connected on seven consecutive 3-pointers in a 75-73 win over W&L. He scored 46 points in that game.

Ben Van Thorre
Van Thorre averaged 28.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in two MIAC games last week, an 84-70 win over St. John's and a 73-68 loss to Bethel. He shot 59 percent from the field (20-for-34) and 85 percent from the free throw line (17-for-20). Van Thorre had 31 points and nine boards in the win against St. John's, becoming the 16th player in the program's history to reach the 1,000-point career scoring mark. He added 26 points, six boards and three assists in Saturday's loss to Bethel. Van Thorre had just one turnover in the two games. He scored his team's first eight points against SJU and first 11 against Bethel.

Billy Lewis
Lewis continued to lead the 18-2 Regents (7-0 Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference), who are on a school-record nine-game winning streak. In a pair of wins over Lakeland and Eureka last week, Lewis avergaed 26.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists. He shot 73.9 percent from the field, 71.4 percent from the 3-point arc and 100 percent from the free throw line (he currently has made 15 in a row).

Derek Reich
Reich led Chicago to a pair of UAA victories, including a 72-60 win over sixth-ranked Rochester. Reich scored 29 points and grabbed 14 boards in a 74-63 win against Carnegie Mellon, then poured in 29 points to go along with 10 rebounds in the win over Rochester.

Women's

Tiffany Whitsell
Whitsell shot 15-for-29 from the floor, 10-for-18 from 3-point range and a perfect 7-for-7 from the line in a two-game week.

Tara Schmitt
Schmitt left the game against UW-Oshkosh in the first half after an on-court collision breaks off her front tooth in half. She returns to game seven minutes later and scored 17 in the second half en route to a career-high 22. Schmitt shot 8-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the win.

Courtney Albert
Albert put up double-doubles in all three Panther games last week. She finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds in PSC's upset win against No. 15 Southern Maine, added 25 points and 11 boards in a come-from-behind win at Colby-Sawyer, and contributed 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in a blowout win against UMass-Dartmouth. For the week, Albert averaged 20.7 points, 14.7 boards, 3.7 assists and 3.3 steals while converting 48.9 percent from the field (22-of-45), 55.6 percent from 3-point range (5-for-9) and 76.5 percent from the free throw line (13-for-17).

C.C. Vaughn
Vaughn averaged 21.8 points and 13.3 rebounds per game, helping Chowan to a 3-1 record. Vaughn set a school-record with 33 points in a single game in a 84-74 win over Peace, but also finished 50 percent from the floor for the week and 5-for-6 from 3-point range, while adding 3.8 assists in games against Christopher Newport, Shenandoah and Greensboro.

Stephanie Mathews
Mathews averaged 19.5 points, 10 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 2.5 assists in two victories. Mathews led the Royals with a game high 20 points in their 76-52 victory over Lynchburg. Mathews not only scored for the Royals, but played exemplary defense as well coming up with a game high four steals while pulling down nine rebounds. Against the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan, Mathews posted 19 points and 11 rebounds in her sixth double-double of the season. She also recorded five steals and two assists in the Royals 86-60 win against Virginia Wesleyan.
